Who are we?
At Petersen Custom Rigging, Dan Thursfield, Paul Russell and Chris Friel have decades of experience in all aspects of mast design and yacht rigging. Between us, we have designed, built and rigged masts for both the Challenge business and the Clipper round the world race, as well as many other cruising and racing yachts in the UK and beyond. Because of this we have an extensive knowledge of all aspects of masts, rigging and deck hardware and use this to provide our customers with professional and impartial advice. Finally, like you, we are sailors; we love sailing and spend our summers either competing at events such as Cowes Week or Dartmouth Regatta or cruising the beautiful South Devon coastline. This means we understand what your boat means to you and we endeavour to make sure your sailing experience is enhanced and improved, whether it’s for an 18′ dayboat or an 80′ superyacht.
What we offer
We offer the full range of services that you would expect from your yacht rigger, from insurance approved rig checks to full re-rigs. We can swage wire up to 28mm and head rods up to -76. We can supply spars, furlers and deck hardware from all the leading manufacturers. We are the main UK agents for Rutgerson deck hardware and many of their product are available on our online shop.
We have a comprehensive knowledge of and are adept at solving any issues you may have with your mast. Whether it is one of the major mast manufacturers Z Spars, Selden, Sparcraft, Jon Mast, Super Spars, Proctor or a custom spar, we have the know how and skills to over come any problem.
We have an extensive stock of rope from Marlow and can provide all the bits of string you will ever need, plus advice on how to get the best out of your boat and her systems.
Our mast fabrication side of the business covers everything from repairing a damaged boom to designing and building masts for clients such as Clipper Ventures, Indian Navy and BAE Systems. We believe our experience in mast fabrication gives us the edge over the competition and because of this we have been able to save and repair masts for our customers when they had been condemned by other riggers.

Where we cover
From our base in South Devon, we are happy to travel the length and breadth of the south west to meet your yacht rigging requirements. We have a standard travelling tariff (available on request) and will happily split between customers at a single location. We cover Falmouth, Fowey, Plymouth and the Yealm in the West, Weymouth, Portland, Lyme Regis and Axemouth in the East, Bristol, Portishead, Avonmouth, Whatchet, Illfracombe, Barnstable and Bideford in the North. Finally, closer to home Exmouth, Teignmouth, Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Salcombe and Dartmouth are within an hour’s drive.
From our Hamble base at Universal Marina we are able to work on boats in Portsmouth, Gosport, the Solent and on the Hamble itself.
